There are many free dog
training tips available, but you will get better results when you purchase a good book or videos that have
been provided by a professional dog trainer. Many free dog training tips usually do not go into the ‘how’ that
you need to know to get good results from training your dog so it is best to get hold of a book that
does.
Hi - let me introduce myself to you. My name
isBarbara Gabogrecan and
I am a dog trainer, breeder and breed confirmation dog judge in Australia. I have been around dogs all my
life. Initially the dogs I grew up with were working farm dogs, mainly cross bred Border Collies and Kelpies.
It always amazed me as a child how Dad could get these dogs to muster sheep and cattle simply with a series
of whistles! I have learnt a lot over the years; I have shown Dalmatians, Maltese, a Miniature
Schnauzer, a Boxer, Australian Terriers, an Akita (see pictuer at
left) and have bred over 60 litters. I am now training a young Cavalier King
Charles Spaniel for TV work using the clicker method of dog training.
There is no doubt in my mind that training a dog brings many
rewards for both the trainer and the dog and I am happy to share some free dog training tips with
youas they can give you a good insight into just how simple some
training methods are.
The main thing to remember is that you have to have a lot of
patience and put a great deal of time into training your dog to be a good social citizen. But it is worth it!
A dog that will sit, stay, drop and come on command will make your life easier and the dog will respect you
and treat you like the alpha being that you have to be. If he can beg, shake hands, roll over and bow as
well, you will both begin to have real fun.
Using Food to Get Results
The main free dog training tip I can give you is to use
food as a reward when training your dog. Find out what his favourite foods are and have a variety to offer
him. Keep the food rewards very small (you don’t want to make the dog fat through training methods). Sometimes
it is necessary to reduce his main meal so that the training food rewards and the main meal add up to the
total food the dog should have in any given day.
The free dog training tip to make your dog more enjoyable is to
get him to wait for a command before he is allowed to eat his food. This free dog training tip is
particularly useful when there is more than one dog to be fed in close proximity to each
other.
Start by making the dog stay in one spot while you are preparing
the food. I like the dog to be in the drop position as they are less likely to break. Then when the food is
ready place it in the same position every time, turn, look at your dog and wait a couple of seconds then say
one word, like ‘yes’, to allow him to go to the food and eat.
To add another element to the food reward system as a free dog
training tip, try this. Have your dog in a drop position.. Offer him food (or better still, have someone else
offer him the food) and you give the command ‘leave it’. Every time he tries to move towards the food repeat
the command and cover the food. Once he understands and ignores the food being offered, you reward him with a
piece of his own special food bits that you have as rewards.
The next step in this series of food related free dog training
tips is to have the dog in a drop position and place a small piece of food on his paw, giving the command
‘leave it’. Wait a few seconds then say ‘yes’ to release him from the command thus letting him eat the food
off his paw.
This web site will give you lots of free dog training tips such as
how to house break your puppy, how to stop barking, chewing and digging and how to stop dog aggression.
But, in the mean time, have a look at this video of a cute little Cavalier King Charles Spaniel,
performing a series of simple commands to a story line.
