Part 1
How to Choose Your Puppy
We purchase puppies for a variety of reasons, but we
ultimately choose one because it is so cute and seems to bond with us. It is ‘love at first sight’. Sometimes,
the puppy chooses us! To enjoy your puppy and to ensure you have a good life with him for a long time, you
will need some puppy training tips.
When I chose my last puppy (a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) I went to get a
female Blenheim (the popular red and white colouring of the breed) but I came home with a tri colour (black, white
and tan) male puppy! How did this happen? Because he chose me!
The breeder had four litters and they were in together. When the 14 puppies
tumbled out to greet us, Cooper literally bounded away from the pack, ran straight over to me, untied my shoelaces
and grabbed the cuff of my trousers. When I moved away to get a better look at the others, he followed me. The
whole hour I was at the breeders, Cooper was ‘in my face’ the entire time. There was no question about it, I had to
choose Cooper – he insisted on it!
Puppy training tips: #1 If you get a puppy that is so determined
to get your attention, expect him to be obsessive and demand a lot of attention. On the other hand, he will also be
easy to train because he so desperately wants your attention and approval.

Sleeping at
Night
It is obvious that a puppy will miss its litter mates on the first few nights it is
on its own. When you put it to bed, make sure you have a special place where you want it to sleep. They will often
settle better if the sleeping box is covered. Have a hot water bottle and a clock well hidden under blankets so
that it is warm and the pup can hear a noise similar to its Mum’s heartbeat. Also place a piece of your clothing
with the puppy.
I brought a new Maltese puppy home for my 8 year old son. When it was bed time I
told my son to put the puppy to bed and waited for the expected whining and crying. But I heard nothing. Half an
hour later I decided to creep in and have a look. My son had made a pillow for the tiny puppy out of a hand towel
and put a ‘blanket’ of a larger towel over the puppy, with a little toy rabbit beside him on the pillow. He was
fast asleep. This ritual went on for a couple of weeks and I never once heard a sound. That little toy rabbit was
the pup’s favourite toy for many years, until it fell to pieces.
Puppy training tips: #2 Make sure your puppy has something
special to go to bed with in the first couple of weeks and be regular. I provided a Cavalier puppy with a fabric
pyramid type sleeping compartment which was kept in the walk in wardrobe in our bedroom. Each night I would say
“OK. Its bed time” and carry her into the compartment, where she happily slept all night (she was never one to want
to relieve herself during the night). One night when she was around 3 months old, I said the usual “OK. Its bed
time” when (before I could move) she hopped up, went into her bed and put herself to bed! I was amazed, but I only
ever had to say those words from that point on, and she happily put herself to bed.

Housetraining with Newspaper
Sometimes the biggest problem you will experience with a new puppy is how to
housetrain it. You are bound to get an accident or two on your carpet, but you must not become mad at the puppy,
smack him, yell at him or rub his nose in it. Simply pick him up and put him outside where he should go.
Puppy training tips: #3 If your puppy is shut in the laundry at
night, then lay newspaper on the floor, away from where he sleeps
and towards the door. This can be used in conjunction with special ‘weeing mats’. Once he is using it, move
the paper further and further across the room, until it is actually outside the door (you may need to put
something heavy on it to hold it from blowing away. It should not take long for him to learn to go outside to
relieve himself, but it does mean that you have to leave the door open at a night.
