Stop Dogs from Digging
Now
As some dogs like digging so much, rather than stop dogs
from digging, the really easy solution is to provide them with a digging pit right from the moment you bring
your puppy home. Have the pit filled with sawdust, wood shavings or sand and hide some rubber toys in the pit.
He will have great fun digging them out.
The only real problem you will have is if you have a cat and it starts to use the
pit for its litter tray. Therefore it is important to cover the pit during the night and when it is not in use
during the day. Like all things, if the dog has access to it all the time, it can lose its uniqueness; so by only
uncovering it every now and then, the dog appreciates it all the more.
This book will give you some more ideas on how to stop dogs from
digging
Don’t Try This
I had a Dalmatian once that dug holes in the yard big enough for her to get into.
I had read that if you filled the hole with water and held the dogs head under for a few seconds, it would scare
the dog and it would stop digging. I was so desperate to learn how to stop dogs from digging that I foolishly
decided to try this bad piece of advice. I filled the hole with water and tried to put my dogs head into the
water.
Well, the dog was not going to have anything to do with that (sensible girl!). We
began to wrestle. The harder I tried to get her head down, the harder she struggled; it turned out she was stronger
than me! In the end, I was in the hole of water! We were both exhausted and covered with mud when I gave up and sat
there laughing with my Dalmatian beside me, tongue out and a big grin on her face! She thought it was a great new
game!
Eventually I stopped her from digging by covering each hole as she dug one.
By covering the hole with a heavy wire mesh, you can stop dogs from digging and you can even sprinkle some lawn
seed on the spot. The sun and rain can penetrate the mesh wire and once the lawn grows you can remove the wire. You
can also easily lift the wire when you have to mow the lawn.
When you exercise your dog, if you have access to a beach, they can enjoy a romp
and a dig in the sand. Then it is easy to fill in any holes and you do not have to stop dogs from digging. But
there can still be dangers when exercising on the beach.
I lived at Port Macquarie in NSW, Australia and we had a lovely secluded beach
where dogs could romp. One day I noticed my eldest dog eating something on the beach. By the time I got to her, it
was gone. But it looked like a fish. Later that afternoon, my dog got ill and began to vomit. She dug a hole behind
her kennel and got in it. I knew she was in trouble and had probably eaten a poisonous fish. I rushed her to the
vet – but we were too late. We lost our precious dog.
You can stop dogs from digging by being a bit creative and not losing your temper
with the dogs, as this will only encourage them to do it again, as it can become a game. Never hit your dogs –
rather distract them if you want to stop dogs from digging.
